Pro Bono Attorneys

Multiple studies have shown that asylum seekers are 4 times more likely to win asylum if they have an attorney. And we know this to be true through our direct experience representing hundreds of asylum seekers over the years.

PAIR's ability to serve over 1,600 clients each year is only made possible because of our incredible pro bono community, made up of dedicated volunteers and law firm partners like you. Together, we ensure that asylum seekers are not alone, and always have zealous advocates in their corner.

PAIR has many opportunities for volunteer attorneys, ranging from community "Know Your Rights," legal orientation in immigration detention, habeas petitions, humanitarian parole, bond hearings, representing minors (SIJS), asylum representation, and other forms of humanitarian relief for immigrants.

PAIR also has two pro bono programs to support attorneys in directly representing asylum seekers.

rapid response team

PAIR's Rapid Response Team consists of pro bono attorneys supporting asylum seekers on a limited scope basis on cases that PAIR has screened and/or accepted. Team members can:

Represent a detained PAIR client at their bond hearing (typically around a 2 week process);

Assist a PAIR client by preparing/filing their initial Asylum Application, also known as a "skeletal" I-589 form;

Prepare/file a PAIR client's Employment Authorization Document application (EAD).

asylum cohort

PAIR's Asylum Cohort is a supportive community of pro bono attorneys who have committed to actively represent an asylum seeker within 6 months of joining the cohort. There are currently two seasonal cohorts that launch in the Spring and Fall.

Participating attorneys are matched with an asylum seeker who needs critical legal assistance, as well as a PAIR staff attorney, so there is tailored support for the case every step of the way.

The cohort participates in a live Asylum 101 training as well as a series of around 6 Lunch & Learns throughout the season.
